Golfing holidaymakers
will find courses to suit all levels of ability in the Washington, District
of Columbia (DC) region, both within the city and in the surrounding
area.
LANGSTON GOLF COURSE
Situated at 2600 Benning
Road NE, near Capitol Hill, Langston was opened in 1939 and named in
honour of John Mercer Langston, the first African American to represent
Virginia in the US Congress. The picturesque, 18-hole, par-72 course,
measuring 6,340 yards, provides a good test for novices and experts.
The front nine holes, on Kingman Island, were added to the National
Register of Historic Places in 1991. Widely considered the best course
in the city and the only course with water hazards, Langston offers
some tough, risk / reward challenges, with water in play on many holes
(particularly the 1st, 3rd and 10th ) and small, elevated greens. Additional
facilities offered at Langston Golf Course include a pro shop, practice
putting green, snack bar and 50-bay driving range, along with a golf
school offering tuition to golfers of every level of ability.
EAST POTOMAC GOLF COURSE
Located in East Potomac Park,
Washington, DC, East Potomac is the busiest of the 3 courses in the
city. Designed by architect Robert White, there are 3 individual courses
offering different levels of difficulty.
Blue Course
The 18-hole Blue Course is a par-72 "links" style course, with 4 sets
of tees ranging from 6,599 yards to 5,203 yards. It provides a demanding
test of golfing ability, especially when a strong wind blows off the
Potomac River. However, the course is essentially fair, with a good
balance of risk and reward. Golfers play against a backdrop of some
of Washington`s finest landmarks, including the Washington monument
and Jefferson Memorial.
White Course
The par-33 White
Course offers three par-3 holes and six, short par-4s (the longest being
381 yards from the back tee), making it ideal for beginners and intermediate
players, while allowing more accomplished golfers to practice their
iron game.
Red Course
The Red Course is a 9-hole, par-3
layout, ideal for all golfers to practice their short game. Holes range
(from the back tees) from a mere 66 yards to a more challenging 208
yards, but all are tricky enough to provide a decent test for all golfers.
Additional facilities at East Potomac include a pro shop, snack
bar, practice putting greens, 3 practice holes and a 2-storey, 100-bay
driving range, with, for the more pampered golfer, 25 heated bays.
WASHINGTON GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB
Established in 1894, this
private, Donald Ross-designed course is located in Arlington County,
Virginia, to the west of the Potomac River. However, it is only 7 miles
(11km) from Washington, with a driving time of 15-30 minutes, dependent
on traffic. Washington Golf and Country Club, the oldest golf club in
the area, offers a well-maintained, challenging golf course, with scenic
views over the river. The 18-hole course has 3 sets of tees, ranging
from 6,133 yards (par-70) to 5,546 yards (par 73) to suit all golfers.
Facilities for non-golfers include tennis, a swimming pool and fitness
centre.
Visitors to the Washington Golf and Country Club and other courses in the DC area will find that cheap car hire in Washington is an ideal way of getting around.
